In 2023, Parties and partners of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, including the CBD Secretariat, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UNEP, Society for Ecological Restoration (SER), CIFOR-ICRAF and others, joined forces to enhance technical and methodological basis to plan, implement and monitor GBF Target 2 to set at least 30% of degraded ecosystem on the path of restoration. This support was provided through the UN Decade's monitoring taskforce through webinars, side events, and workshops organized by the partners. The side event will present key outcomes of the Target 2 workshop "Developing a Roadmap for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, held in November 2023, in Rome. During this workshop, attended by over 100 participants representing countries, IPLCs, and international organizations, country needs were identified, technical and scientific gaps were addressed, and a comprehensive plan for country support was outlined.
A key component of this plan is the collaborative development of the Resource Manual for Target 2, aimed at providing guidance and resources for countries and restoration implementers to update the national restoration targets and operationalize restoration activities.
The side event will introduce key content from the discussion draft of the guide. It will also offer an opportunity for countries to share their experiences, challenges, and successes in formulating national ecosystem restoration targets in the build-up to COP 16. The event aims to disseminate the draft Resource Manual to Target 2, inviting countries and experts to provide valuable inputs for refining the document.
