Since the advent of the global pandemic, we’ve witnessed change like we could never have imagined. Our priorities have shifted, our needs rethought, and our lifestyles transformed to cope with the implications of a new and unknown disease. But the enduring power of collective empathy became apparent during Pictures for Purpose’s successful inaugural edition in 2020, which raised money for the Dutch food bank, supporting those most affected by the unforeseen economic and social impact of the pandemic.

Although community success stories like these are always encouraging, many of us wonder when the climate crisis will be treated with the same urgency. How is it that we can mobilise in the face of a new threat, but allow another desperate crisis to smoulder on in the background? And how long do we have left to act decisively?

In times like these art can fulfil a crucial role. Artists can create awareness through their work, shedding light on a variety of important causes. The medium of photography becomes an ideal tool to inspire, connect and implement change during challenging times.

For their second edition, the Dutch initiative Pictures for Purpose will seek to raise awareness for the implications of climate change, as well as secure valuable channels of support for an organization fighting against it.

Pictures for Purpose is pleased to announce a second print sale fundraiser, which will run from 7th June – 21st June 2021, featuring works by 36 international artists.

In collaboration with Justdiggit and in support of the United Nations Environment programme, Pictures for Purpose hopes to spotlight the UN Decade on Ecosystem restoration, running from 2021-2030. In a global call to action, the UN decade draws together political support, scientific research and financial muscle to massively scale up restoration. For this fundraiser, the proceeds will be raised for the NGO Justdiggit. With the support of partners like Justdiggit- this UN initiative is designed to prevent, halt and reverse the loss and degradation of ecosystems worldwide.

About Justdiggit

Justdiggit is on a mission to cool down the earth by making dry land in Africa green again. The projects that Justdiggit initiates together with local partners in various African countries have positive effects on the preservation of biodiversity, livelihood and climate. They use the power of communication and (mobile) technology to scale up the regreening process. Justdiggit's ultimate goal is to eventually have African farmers themselves regreen their own land. Nature based solutions are  37% of the solution to global warming.

Working with a range of grassroots partners in Sub-Saharan Africa, Justdiggit is committed to reviving lost ecosystems, with an emphasis on regreening millions of hectares of land where vegetation is threatened by climate change.

“Justdiggit is a Dutch initiative of international relevance with a global impact; they are actively working with local partners in Sub-Saharan Africa and are official partners of the United Nations Environment Programme. Justdiggit proves that, as an initiative or organization from a relatively small country, you can establish valuable collaborations and make a positive change in the fight against the climate crisis”, say Kunna Haan and Isabella van Marle, founders of Pictures for Purpose.

Justdiggit

Collaboratively Pictures for Purpose hopes to support the Regreen Revolution. The proceeds from this fundraiser will be shared between Justdiggit and, at their discretion, the participating artists themselves, to account for lost revenue during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, to account for lost revenue during the ongoing corona virus pandemic
