Abstract: Ecosystem restoration is now at the forefront of the global conservation agenda: the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) calls for increased action to reverse ecological degradation and move towards recovery trajectories for biodiversity, ecosystems and ecosystem services. It is essential that these restoration efforts are evaluated so that progress towards ecosystem recovery can be tracked at local to global scales. The IUCN Green Status of Species identifies the extent to which a species will be able to recover in the future under different management scenarios, and how effective past actions have been. Yet no standardised method to measure, evaluate and compare recovery outcomes for ecosystems exists. To fill this gap, the recently established Green Status of Ecosystems Task Force, under the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management, aims to develop methods for assessing conservation impact and recovery potential for ecosystem types, beyond the site level. This talk will provide an overview of the IUCN Green Status of Species methods, outline the plans for developing the Green Status of Ecosystems and highlight some of the conceptual challenges the Task Force will need to overcome. These Green Status frameworks can be used to help inform meaningful and feasible recovery targets for the future and assess past conservation success.

Bio-Sketch: Jessica Walsh is a Research Fellow in the School of Biological Sciences at Monash University, Australia, and Co-Chair of the Green Status of Ecosystems Task Force, IUCN CEM. Her research focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of conservation actions for threatened species and ecosystems and developing conservation decision support tools. Her background is in evidence-based practice, structured decision making and conservation ecology, having previously studied and worked at the University of Queensland, University of Cambridge and Simon Fraser University.

About the series: The webinar series is a forum to learn and connect with restoration practitioners from around the globe. Webinars are held the 3rd Friday of each month from 12 to 1 pm Eastern EDT (UTC-4) using the platform “Zoom”. Previous session videos and presentations can be found on the Series YouTube Playlist. Subscribe and select “notifications” to get alerts when new videos are posted.
