Mobilizing Private Finance and Philanthropy for Ecosystem Restoration: Closing the Biodiversity Finance Gap.

Governments, financial institutions, and businesses have pledged to increase restoration efforts through several high-level global initiatives since ecosystem restoration has significant economic and financial benefits (Stewart et al. 2022). The State of Finance Nature report estimates that only approximately USD 133 billion/year currently flows into Nature-based solutions with the vast majority from public funds (86%) while private finance contributes only 14%. According to the report, there is an urgent need for actors in the public, private, and non-profit sectors to take action and increase their investments by at least four times over the next three decades.

This learning session aims to discuss how to direct investments from the private sector as well as from philanthropy into ecosystem restoration initiatives which help close the biodiversity financial gap and tackle climate change and environmental degradation.

This learning session will contribute to shedding light on the UN Decade Business Challenge of the UN Decade Action Plan. The knowledge session will promote and foster discussions on how the Business Challenge will drives change by mobilising the private sector, facilitating multi-stakeholder partnerships in key regions, and supporting innovation and ecopreneurship on the ground for the UN Decade and the global #GenerationRestoration movement.
