KUNMING-MONTREAL GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY FRAMEWORK TARGET 2 – from commitment to implementation of transparent and effective ecosystem restoration.

Globally, around 1 billion hectares have been committed to land restoration. Ecosystem restoration, inclusive of all ecosystems spanning terrestrial, inland water, marine and coastal areas, is a powerful nature-based solution to multiple crises including biodiversity loss, climate change and land degradation, which severely affect livelihoods in many regions of the world.
The next seven years are critical as we accelerate toward the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement and the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. With so much at stake, expectations have never been higher for ecosystem restoration to deliver substantial benefits. However, ecosystem restoration can only deliver the desired benefits if it is effective, which requires careful planning using a minimum set of criteria. It is also critical that progress is transparently monitored and reported to improve adaptive management and ensure accountability against ambitious commitments.
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework provides a strategic and operational framework to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Countries have adopted a global target which aims for at least 30 per cent of areas of degraded terrestrial, inland water, and marine and coastal ecosystems to be under effective restoration by 2030. The Framework also provides qualifiers of effective restoration which enhances biodiversity, integrity and connectivity of ecosystems, as well as ecosystem functions and services.
This event will explore the needs of the countries as they take stock of current initiatives and review commitments toward developing or revising effective restoration plans for multiple synergistic outcomes across multilateral environmental agreements and other international pledges. These plans would be developed and incorporated into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans according to national priorities and circumstances.
The event will also present progress toward transparent monitoring of progress, and indicator development for Target 2 – area under restoration. A draft methodology for data collection, compilation, and reporting has been created building on existing data, and interoperability principles.
By bringing the latest knowledge and tools for ecosystem restoration and monitoring of progress, as well as national experiences, this event will facilitate a dialogue with the countries, partners and major groups on data, knowledge and capacity building needs, to support the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
