COP15

Achieving a robust target for Ecosystem Restoration: a Science-Policy dialogue (IUCN, WWF, Future Earth, IIS)

Scientists and advocates invite negotiators to informally discuss brackets in Target 2

There are still methodological, technical and political issues that might prevent CBD Parties from agreeing on an ambitious Target 2 on ecosystem restoration in the GBF that can resolve the flaws that existed with its predecessor Aichi Target 15. Conflicting views regarding fundamental issues cover the level of ambition (how much restoration is needed/possible) scope (is it only ecological restoration to a natural state or it should include all the restoration continuum) and outcomes of restoration (how to make sure it supports Goal A and B?). Presenters will share science-based arguments and exchange views with all negotiators interested in how Target 2 can represent the different views heard in the OEWG and CBD meetings.

Panelists:

  • Paul Leadley: Paris-Saclay University, bioDISCOVERY - FutureEarth, IPBES Scenarios and models TF
  • Bernardo Strassburg: founder and President of the International Institute for Sustainability (IIS) in Rio de Janeiro, coordinator of the the Centre for Conservation and Sustainability Science (CSRio)
  • Country delegates (TBC)

Moderators:

  • Barbara Bendandi: Global Coordinator UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, WWF
  • Adriana Vidal: Senior Policy Advisor, Climate Change, IUCN

Situation report from Montreal #COP15: The last negotiations for Target 2 still left several things in brackets. Key things unsolved: level of ambition (is science backing the numbers?), scope of restoration (back to natural + rehabilitation but how much of each?) and national responsibility

Join this event were these issues will be discussed as negotiations continue. There is still a chance to get this right!
